Resurfacing is a common solution for asphalt in disrepair. Resurfacing consists of installing a new layer of asphalt over existing asphalt. Although specifications and requirements may differ, standard resurfacing ranges between 1 ½” – 2”. Where curbing, sidewalks or other grading constraints must be maintained, existing asphalt may be milled down to accommodate the new surface, ensuring a flush and consistent surface.
Asphalt Removal and Replacement
R&R is recommended when the vast majority of asphalt in question is in disrepair. Much like patching, R&R requires the complete removal of any damaged asphalt and aggregate. The process of asphalt construction is then required. Asphalt construction consists of: 1) Excavating/grading to achieve proper drainage and grade; 2) Install aggregate and compact to appropriate depth; 3) Install binder/asphalt combination according to customer specifications and requirements.
Crack Sealing
Crack sealing may arguably be the most important process in asphalt maintenance. Sealing cracks in a timely manner can increase the life of your asphalt 10-15 years before extensive repair is needed. Cracks less than 1/4″ wide should not be filled with crack sealer as the narrow width won’t permit the filler material to adhere within the gap. Some cracks may have to be mechanically routed-out to 1/2″ wide X 1/2″ deep so filler will settle and adhere deep into the asphalt. Prior to sealing, all cracks will be blown free of debris. Sealer will then be hot poured into all the cracks and leveled to approximately 1/8″ X 3″ wide. Hot pour crack filling is recommended primarily for commercial asphalt maintenance.
Seal Coating
Sealer, stored in agitated tanks, is supplied to applicators from commercial vehicles and is always hand-squeegee applied. Hand application ensures proper material penetration and protects surrounding elements from over-spray where spraying applications are used. Products applied are Sakrete Amguard S-250 coal tar and Sealmaster coal tar.
